A Nation Stranded on a Sea of Fear Following the Inauguration.

A large portion of the guilt for normalising Donald Trump’s words and actions must go to the US news media. One journalist on National Public Radio demonstrated the media’s surrender to Trump after giving him a platform for years by using the ridiculous term “unconventional” to A Nation Stranded on a Sea of Fear Following the Inauguration. characterise a diverse group of nominees who are more appropriately described as “unqualified” or “dangerous.”

A Nation Stranded on a Sea of Fear Following the Inauguration

Shortly after US President Donald Trump won the election, I was cruising the radio dial as he was choosing his ideal group of outcasts and criminals to guide his administration to the promised land of right-wing ideology.

I managed to find my way to one of the numerous public affairs programs on National Public Radio where the entire Trump list of cabinet officials and other individuals to be appointed to high-level US Government jobs was discussed. The host’s description of the group as a whole as “unconventional” was the only noteworthy aspect of the presentation.

The word “unconventional” isn’t one of the many ways to characterise Trump’s nominee honour record. Every time a new name is added to the list, the bar for “unconventional” gets progressively lower. However, it’s important to note that the mainstream media’s normalisation of Trump, his campaign, his followers, and his agenda is partly to blame for the attack on American governance. Our national public radio station chose the word “unconventional,” seemingly disregarding other, more appropriate options like “unqualified,” “inappropriate,” or even just plain “dangerous.”

Really unconventional? How adorable. Wearing sweatpants to the country club’s supper is “unconventional.” Making vegan food in beef broth is considered “unconventional.” Getting married in a treehouse is “unconventional.” In general, being unconventional is not risky or dangerous.

Over the next few weeks, we will witness Republican senators praising one of these criminals who were elevated to positions of power in order to fulfil Trump’s fanciful aspirations. This project is not new to us. Recall the justices of the Supreme Court who, after looking most of those senators in the eye, promised a different legal environment than what they really provided. The scenario is now prepared for the same dishonest embrace to occur again, this time with the intention of contaminating the executive branch of government.

Let’s play the old tape of Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins gloating about how certain she was that Brett Kavanaugh, whom she was going to vote to confirm for the Supreme Court, was committed to the sanctity of precedent in the context of Roe v. Wade as a handy reminder of what we are about to witness and its corrupting influence on governance. Collins remains there and continues to be tasked with serving the country honourably and responsibly while high-level appointed officials are being confirmed by the Senate. All of the Republican senators who joined the Trump circus after evaluating his threat to the country the first time will join her.
